Charyn Canyon is a natural landmark in the Almaty Region, inside Charyn National Park, 200 km from Almaty. A day trip from the city fits into 10–12 hours: paved road, accessible year-round. It’s often compared to the Grand Canyon — smaller, but still feels like a different world.
This guide: what to know before you go — seasons, how to get there, eco fees, tour formats, and what to pack.
What is Charyn Canyon and where is it
Charyn Canyon: what it is and why you should visit
Charyn Canyon is one of the most striking and recognizable natural landmarks in Kazakhstan. It’s often compared to the Grand Canyon in the USA, though it’s considerably smaller. That said, when it comes to sheer beauty, variety of rock formations, and sense of scale, it holds its own against many famous canyons around the world.
This is a place where you can literally feel the breath of geological ages. The massive canyon walls, rocky towers, and labyrinth-like passages were formed over 12 million years ago through weathering and erosion.
The main attraction
The star of Charyn Canyon is the Valley of Castles (Dolina Zamkov). This is where most tourists head, and for good reason.
First, you can take in the canyon from above — there’s a parking area and a visitor center with a proper restroom and the Tary restaurant.
From there, you can descend into the Valley of Castles for a walk. The standard route takes you on foot from the visitor center down to the Charyn River. People usually hang out by the river to relax or have a picnic. There’s a bit of shade along the way, but in the heat there aren’t many sheltered spots, so bring a hat and plenty of water.
Walking at a brisk pace, it takes about 40 minutes one way, but factor in more time for photos and rest stops.
You can also hop on a UAZ (a rugged Russian-made 4×4) from the visitor center to get down to the Charyn River and back. A one-way ride starts at 500 KZT (~$1).
We recommend setting aside 2–2.5 hours for your visit so you don’t feel rushed.

There are also off-the-beaten-path routes — they’re more challenging, require better physical fitness, and should be done with a guide.
Fun facts
- Charyn Canyon stretches for about 154 km.
- The canyon walls range from 150 to 300 meters high.
- The most famous section is the Valley of Castles, where rock formations look like towers and fortresses.
- The canyon is home to a rare relict ash tree — the only other place you’ll find its relative is in North America.
- Wildlife includes foxes, lizards, snakes, and steppe birds.
Best time to visit Charyn: seasons and weather
Spring and fall — the best time to go
- April–May: warm but not hot yet — perfect for walking around.
- September–October: the heat eases off and the temperature is really pleasant.
Winter and early spring — still a good option
- November–March: November and March are cool but not cold. In winter, temperatures can drop to –10 °C and there might be some snow, but it doesn’t take away from the canyon’s beauty — if anything, it adds a whole new vibe.

Summer — not the best season
- June–August: temperatures can hit +40…+50 °C, so during this period it’s better to choose other destinations or arrive very early in the morning. You can also consider an overnight trip where you catch both the sunset and sunrise at the canyon.
How to get there from Almaty
Distance to Charyn Canyon: how long is the drive
From Almaty, take the A-351 highway through the village of Baiseit. After the settlement of Kurty, you’ll see the turn-off to Charyn.
The drive takes about 3 hours one way without stops.
We recommend plotting your route to the Charyn visitor center on a map: Google Maps, 2GIS, Yandex Maps.
If you’re using 2GIS, don’t rely on its estimated travel time. In Kazakhstan, this app isn’t always accurate with driving times.
Getting there: car, bus, rideshare, or tour
- You can drive there by car or join an organized tour.
- There are no regular buses to Charyn.
- You could try finding a ride through InDrive (a popular rideshare app in Central Asia), but there’s a risk of not finding a driver when you want to head back.
Charyn Canyon entry fees (updated for 2026)
Visiting Charyn Canyon requires an entry fee, since the area is part of the Charyn State National Nature Park. The fees go toward maintaining, cleaning, and protecting the park.

Where to stay overnight at Charyn and how much it costs
If you want to spend more time at Charyn Canyon or don’t feel like rushing back to Almaty the same day, you can stay overnight.
The visitor center offers glamping tents and cabins. The glamping is more basic — essentially just a tent setup. The cabins are more comfortable and come with a bathroom, shower, and air conditioning.
Prices range from 40,000 to 75,000 KZT (~$80–$150) per night depending on the day of the week and the type of accommodation.
You can book on the visitor center website.
You can also camp with your own tent on the park grounds. In that case, you’ll pay a slightly higher eco-fee at the park entrance.

What to watch out for
A lot of Almaty-based tour companies compete not on service quality but on the number of destinations and rock-bottom prices. They offer tours where you visit 4–6 places in one or two days at a bargain rate. Sounds great, but in reality this often means:
- departing at 6 AM and getting back late at night;
- barely any time at each stop (sometimes less than an hour);
- worn-out buses with broken air conditioning;
- poor organization (delays, inconvenient food and restroom stops);
- inexperienced guides;
- a huge group with just one guide.
Before booking, pay attention to these points and ask questions if they matter to you. Unfortunately, most of the market operates this way.
